THE WILSON HOMESTEAD.
Mr. and Mrs. Ole Wilson settled on the West shore of Little Spirit Lake in 1869, coming from Preston, Minn., over the pathless prairie, with all our belongings packed in two covered wagons, a few head of stock driven behind. Myriads of water fowl covered pond and lake. Our house was built of logs, the lumber being hauled from St. James, 75 miles away. In father's absence mother and myself, a child, of three, stayed alone. Think of the courage it took to hear the howling of wolves and see the distant prairie fires knowing there was no one to protect, save God. The great sorrow of our lives was the death of my younger sister Rosa, who was fatally burned by the explosion of a gasoline stove at Lakefield, Minn., in 1890. As the years rolled on times grew brighter. In the Seventies' we had quite a little colony. We lived on the old homestead until my father's death in 1892. My brother Louis now lives there. My mother, who is seventy-four, is an honored member of my home.

THE PIONEER GIRL'S CLUB.
THE SPIRIT LAKE PIONEER GIRLS' CLUB was organized January 12, 1894, with 18 members, namely; Ella Arnold Stevens, President; Hattie Kingman Farnham, Vice President; Amma Mott Miller, Secretary; Minnie Bingman Bergman, Assistant Secretary; Naoma Arnold Beebee, Dena Barkman Funk, Eunice Frances Brownell, Mattie Frances Smith, Pearl Arnold Furgeson, Ella Crandall Johnson, Alice Crandall, Carrie Abbott Everett, Millie Baxter Reed, Heattie Arnold Sanford, May Abbott Blackert, Addie Barron Chandler, Heattie Crandall Nefzgar, Mary Jamerson Arthur, Mrs. S. L. Pillsbury, T. J. Francis, and Sarah Swailes.
Later Mrs. Osborne, Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Narey joined our ranks. The object of the organization was both social and literary benefit, to reestablish the friendship of the girls of pioneer days.
The motto chosen was "Loyalty Binds Us." The program for each meeting was as follows: Response to roll call by quotation from the works of the author to be discussed at that meeting. The subject to be under the leadership of two ladies, one giving a sketch of the Authors' life and the other to read a poem or article from his pen, after which followed an open discussion by the circle.
Last — but by no means least — lunch was to be served by each hostess with as little or much style as she deemed necessary (considering the distinguished guests, distinguished chiefly for their age), but was limited to six or less articles of food. Any one overstepping this limit was to be subjected to a fine of not less than one dollar or confinement in the county jail for an indefinite period. Needless to, say that girls who had lived in Iowa in grasshopper times, when salt pork and potatoes with sorghum molasses for dessert, was considered living on the top shelf, thought this a positive feast and never (?) broke the rule.
While the club was still new the members gave a banquet to 250 guests in the Crandall House. This was considered quite a success and "the girls" were justly proud of their efforts.
Death first entered our ranks in May 29, 1898, Janette Osborne, one of the oldest of the members passed away. Again in October, 1901, the 22nd, the dread angel passed and took one of our brightest and best loved sisters, Carsie Everitt, after an illness of a few short days.
Since beginning this article the sad news carrle from California of the death of Eunice Frances Brownell, April 11, 1906.
As three of our members have been thus removed and at least four others have gone to other towns to live, the club has disbanded. But all agree that those meetings were bright spots in the work-a-day life, and that we are all better and perhaps (some) wiser for the P. G. C.
